Our story

The year was 1988… While most of the world was dreaming of hoverboard-mounted lasers, joining wild pyramid schemes and listening to Milli Vanilli, two mates from Melbourne spurned these distractions and instead turned their youthful, entrepreneurial beards toward the thing they loved the most – travel.

 

Why travel with Intrepid?

The sixty-four thousand dollar question. Finding a travel company that fits just right is pretty important (and pretty difficult). You can join a small guided group, our most popular way to travel and how we started out. In order to truly inspire growth and achieve sustainable travel internationally, GIVE has adopted the Asset-based community development (ABCD) model which is a set of proven best practices in sustainable development that mobilizes a community’s own assets and resources as the basis for development. Furthermore, through providing hands-on and eye-opening learning experiences that foster authentic connections between volunteers and host community members, we are able to empower global citizens who will continue to spread GIVE’s values and ignite sustainable change worldwide.

 

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES TO HELP THEMSELVES

In contrast to the traditional needs-based development model which focuses on local problems and relies on outside agencies for help, asset-based community development is a principle of international sustainable travel that emphasizes existing strengths and potentials within a community and empowers its members to take action. When identifying projects, we first assess the resources, skills, and knowledge already available in a community, unite the community around issues that inspire its members to act. Then we work alongside local leaders to form a plan of action to yield a positive impact.  GIVE’s ultimate goal is for our host communities to take full responsibility of our international volunteer projects as soon as possible.

 

AWAKENING A GENERATION OF GLOBAL CITIZENS

Smartphone is definitely smarter than us and is able to keep us addicted to it  !

Phones we choose for you

Beside main function of receiving or making calls there are many other things that are so useful in our daily life , especially if we travel.

Music is one of them. Load up favourite music before go anywhere, and the long waiting times at the airport or in the bus won’t seem so long anymore! (its good to have a good set of earphones. They’re worth it! )

Also, today some websites have a large selection of the latest movies and our favourite TV shows that we can download straight on our phone to watch later. They’re ideal when we want a long flight to go by smoothly! (many websites allow us to download movies and TV series and might be better options if we know how to upload them on our device).

One of the most useful things is of course GPS navigation together with different GPS applications. GPS is great on a road trip or even when walking through a city. The days of the paper map are long gone. So easely it can help us in many situations:

  • Need to know how to get from point A to point B while on foot?
  • Rented a car and want to know the best way to get to the golf course?
  • Finished our 18-holes and need to fill up our tank?
  • Lost in the jungle and want to know where to go?
  • Want to go to the museum with public transit?
  • Visiting a country where there are no addresses?
  • Want to see all the surrounding restaurants and hotels with descriptions, opening hours and reviews?
  • Can’t find the exact location you’re looking for? …

(it is always good advice to download the GPS Maps and applications to our smartphones so we can use it offline).

If it’s true for music and movies it’s true for books also: no need to bring the heavy paper version with us anymore. All we need to do is to download them on our phone! (while electronic books on smartphones are great when travelling, they can be tiring on the eyes. Try some of the many apps that are available – they have different display options and some might be more comfortable for our eye than others).

If we travel to foreign country and can’t understand local language, best thing would be to have translator and dictionary (or even voice recognition option) on our smartphones (usually we would need to have mobile data to use some of these applications offline… however some offline dictionaries can be downloaded if we don’t have WiFi or data available).

Book flights, trains, buses and hotel rooms! Today, 95% of things that need to be booked can be done so online. A lot of businesses have even shut down their call centres and refuse bookings anywhere but online. And finding an internet café can be a hassle. Even worse: business centres in hotels charge crazy rates. Booking everything from our smartphone is the easiest way to go.(our favourite booking websites might have apps and widgets available. Look for them in favourite app store!).

Having a smartphone is like having a computer in our pocket. With our phone, we can keep up with local and international news, we can see what our friends are up to back home, we can upload awesome pictures on our social networks pages, we can follow the local trends of our current location, we can make video calls with our relatives and much more.

There are many accessories that can help us use our smartphones on the road. Here are a few:

– Most phone chargers are equipped with a transformer which means that any power source will charge our phone. However we’ll need to carry an adapter for the power outlets for our destinations.

– Using our phone all day can kill our battery in a flash. Get a phone that has a removable battery  (buy back-up batteries) or buy an external charge (power bank) If phone’s battery cannot be removed.

– If phone has an SD Card slot, buy a 64GB or 128GB card, they’re relatively cheap. We’ll have all the space we need to store our music, videos and books.

  • In the next 10 years, we expect at least five billion people worldwide to own smartphones, giving every individual with such a phone instant access to the full power of the Internet, every moment of every day ….
  • Smartphones these days keep getting thinner and smarter people the opposite …
  • The average smartphone user checks his or her device every six and a half minutes …

  • The smartphone revolution is under-hyped, more people have access to phones than access to running water. We’ve never had anything like this before since the beginning of the planet.

Our smartphone dear LLET friend has already replaced our camera, our calendar and our alarm clock. Don’t let it replace our family !

It can also be frustrating to carry heavy bags from stores on foot or in a bus. We will not have to go through this hassle if we have a vehicle. Cars come with a trunk that provides sufficient space to easily transport plenty of shopping and heavy materials. Especially its so useful if we have an elderly person in our home – with car no need to worry about calling a taxi or catching a bus.

Also, large vehicles such as minivans or SUV’s have enough room to seat approximately 6 or 8 passengers. Therefore, traveling with a large group of friends or an extended family will no longer be a problem. Additionally, this can even lower our transportation costs on renting vehicles or using public transportation.

Additionally, vehicles are tested for safety on roads. Therefore, if we are a safety-conscious buyer, we can always take a look at the crash-test safety ratings to learn more about the safety of the vehicle we purchase.

By investing today in one car wisely we can take advantage of convenience, safety, and cost-efficient traveling.

LEARN ABOUT TRAVEL – EARN THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES YOU RICHER

A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for !

Sometimes we might feel like we’re stuck in a rut in our daily life or we’re yearning for something exciting and different or maybe we’re craving new experiences and new challenges – travel is the ideal place to test ourself. It pushes people to their limits and gets them outside their comfort zone.

We can discover how resourceful we are when we’re exposed to new places, people and experiences. We’ll feel pride when we finish our trip successfully. Overcoming challenges will bring us joy and energy for future tests. We’ll realize how capable we are and build our confidence.

Learning is for sure also a strong reason why people love to travel.  They all want to experience something unfamiliar and leave with new skills or knowledge. Seeing the world is sometimes more educational than a high school or college class. It can cover subjects like history, geography and sociology.

Every destination has something unique to teach visitors, and immersing themselves in a completely different world is the best learning experience. People may travel to learn something specific: a new language, a new cuisine, aspects of a different culture, or a deeper appreciation of faith or spirituality. As a bonus, they’ll take away more than their specific goal. They’ll discover totally different ways of doing things. They’ll also gain awareness of new customs, cultures, people and places.

Travel helps open our mind. We realize that there’s no one way to live life. Meeting people from other places will show us that our world view isn’t the same as everyone else’s. We can’t imagine how different life is in another place until we see for ourself. Everything from work to family to beliefs to interests is not what we might expect from our own experience. The different setting will also help us discover and consider fresh ideas we hadn’t thought of before. We’ll come home with different notions and possibilities.

Traveling is one of the best ways to learn more about ourself. Every day traveling brings a new set of issues and opportunities. The way we handle those also gives us insight into who we are. We’ll start knowing ourself better and with a fresh perspective on what we want out of life. The experience will change our life. Also, when we’re mired in our daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of what we have. Our eyes aren’t open to what’s really special about our home. Exploring another place will give us a fresh appreciation for our hometown, country and “real life.” We’ll feel lucky to live where we do. Maybe we’ll see that there really is no place like home.

More than anything else travel is an ideal opportunity for families to connect with each other – it’s building and strengthening any kind of relationships. The shared experience of travel brings people together. A family getaway, a romantic trip, or long weekend with the girls or guys can strengthen important bonds. 

Couples, too, need to bond with each other away from home and work demands. Sharing travel experiences can ignite fresh sparks that last long after the couple returns home.

After all, travel is a special way to deepen friendships as well. With co-workers or with our high school gang, travel will remind us why we  became friends with them in the first place, and how good it is to spend focused time together. But it’s a great opportunity to make new friends – either fellow travelers or locals. Meeting and befriending new people is a valuable travel benefit. And once we’ve bonded, new possibilities for future travel unfold – either to visit them or journey with them. A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles!

There are many other reasons why travel is important. For example, a trip is the perfect time to do something different and exciting, especially something we can’t do at home. The thrill starts the minute we land in a new place. Also travel can be a great relief from the stress. Travel is particularly helpful for workaholics who have trouble leaving their job behind. Stepping away from the workplace is good for us both mentally and physically. When we return to the job, we’ll have had the space to look at issues with fresh eyes.

Travel has the power to heal. A relaxing setting and good weather are common ingredients for a trip focused on relaxation. A restful vacation is just what we all need to renew ourself. Just relax and be present in the moment. Let sensations like the lapping water and the warmth of the sun, along with the sound of waves, recharge batteries. Travel helps our mind and body reboot in a way we can’t achieve at home.
